Frequently Asked Questions
FAQs covering Greenland paddle styles, custom sizing, wood choices, maintenance, ordering, and more
How is a Greenland paddle different from a Euro blade?
Unlike modern spoon-shaped Euro blades, Greenland paddles are long and thin with symmetrical narrow blades. Greenland paddles are often nicknamed "Greenland sticks" due to their overall appearance. Greenlands emphasize technique and efficiency rather than brute power resulting in less joint strain, a quieter catch, and improved control — especially during long paddling excursions, rolling, and paddling in wind or waves.
Are your paddles custom sized?
Yes! Every paddle is custom made to order. Length, loom size, blade width, and thickness are tailored to your height, arm span, kayak width, and paddling style. Proper sizing is critical to comfort and performance and is one of the biggest advantages of a handcrafted paddle. Visit the Sizing page for more information.
What types of wood do you use?
I use carefully selected woods chosen for strength, weight, flexibility, and appearance. Western Red Cedar offers a good balance between lightness and strength. Hardwoods, like Cherry, incorporate color and strength, but are a bit heavier. Depending on the design, paddles may be made from a single solid wood or laminated from multiple species. Wood choice affects durability, balance, and aesthetics, and I’m happy to help you choose based on your priorities. Visit the Wood Choices page for a comparison of woods I frequently use in my paddles.
What is a Greenland kayak paddle?
A Greenland paddle is a traditional style of kayak paddle developed by Inuit paddlers of Greenland over centuries of practical use. Designed for efficiency, control, and endurance, it features long, narrow blades and a symmetrical shape that supports smooth, quiet strokes and excellent maneuverability in rough water. Plus, they are cool looking! Visit the Greenland Quote page to see your customization options.
Are laminated paddles better than solid wood paddles?
Laminated paddles can offer increased strength and stability by incorporating a mix of woods, thus allowing for creative design combinations. A properly glued and finished laminated paddle can be as strong (or stronger) than a solid single wood paddle. As an example of a 5-layer lamination construction, a hardwood center stripe can bolster overall strength. Often, the next layer is Western Red Cedar, which gives the loom (shaft) a nice hand-feel and helps balance weight with strength. Finally, the blades are finished with hardwood edges for protection. Hardwood layers do add some weight but that may be offset by strength, style, and protection. In terms of which style is better, I believe it to be a personal preference of style and appearance.
What is a laminated paddle?
Laminated paddles are crafted from multiple woods, which are glued together in vertical and/or horizontal layers. Typically, different species and colors of woods are mixed to create unique paddle designs. Solid wood paddles provide a classic look and feel, often carved from solid Western Red Cedar. Either option can produce excellent paddles when properly designed and built. Visit my Lamination Styles page for examples of paddles designs I have crafted.
Is a Greenland paddle suitable for beginners?
Absolutely! Greenland paddles are forgiving and intuitive, making them well-suited for beginners. They also reward good technique, which is why many experienced paddlers continue to use them for touring, rolling, and advanced skill development.

What is a Storm paddle?
A Storm paddle is a shorter version of a Greenland paddle, traditionally used in high winds, rough seas, or as a spare paddle stored on deck. Its compact size makes it easy to carry while still providing reliable propulsion when needed. Visit the Storm Quote page to see your customization options.
What is a Traditional Norsaq?
A Norsaq is a traditional Greenland tool, also known as a throwing stick, that was used to add power to a harpoon throw when hunting prey. They often have a groove down the center to steady the harpoon shaft, plus two holes that correspond to pegs on the shaft. Visit the Norsaq Quote page to see your customization options.
What is a Norsaq Rolling paddle?
Different from the traditional Norsaq, a Norsaq Rolling paddle is primarily used for rolling practice and training. They range in size from 15-20 inches and help develop balance, body position, and precise technique. Many paddlers find it improves their rolling skills with a full-size paddle. They are also a great transition to developing a hand roll. Visit the Norsaq Quote page to see your customization options.
What is a Decorative paddle?
Decorative paddles, or paddle décor, are smaller paddles that range in size from 4-ft down to 1-ft. They are suitable for display on a wall, over doors, shelf, or desk. Smaller sizes are typically not to scale but are intended as a unique display item to bring the love of Greenland paddles indoors. Visit the Decorative Quote page to see your customization options.
Can I use a Decorative paddle on the water?
Decorative paddles are inspired by functional Greenland designs but are intended for display rather than paddling. They’re ideal for homes, offices, cabins, or boathouses and make meaningful gifts for paddlers who appreciate paddle craftsmanship.
How long does it take to build a paddle?
Because each paddle is handcrafted to order, build times vary depending on design details and current workload. Laminated paddles take longer to build, plus application of the protective finish requires time to cure between coats. I’ll provide an estimated timeline during the ordering process and keep you informed as your paddle takes shape.
Is Greenland paddle weight important?
I believe paddle weight is a personal preference. Historically, Greenland paddles were used for multi-day hunting excursions where light paddle weight could be very beneficial for efficiency and endurance. However, for today's typical outings, weight may be a less critical consideration.
Where do you ship?
At this time, shipping is limited to the continental US. Note that I am based in NJ and full-size one-piece paddles are more expensive to ship - especially long distances like the West coast.
